Abhyangha

Abhyangha

Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic massage therapy that involves the application of warm herbal oil to the body, followed by a gentle and rhythmic massage. The term “Abhyanga” is derived from Sanskrit, where “Abhi” means “towards” and “Anga” means “body,” indicating the application of oil to the entire body.

During Abhyanga, a specific type of warm, medicated oil is chosen based on an individual’s Ayurvedic constitution (prakriti) and any dosha imbalances (vikriti) they may have. The oil is then applied generously all over the body, and the therapist performs a gentle massage using long, sweeping strokes, circular movements, and light kneading. The massage follows the natural flow of the body’s energy channels.

Abhyanga is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating therapy that helps to:

  1. Nourish and moisturize the skin, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion.
  2. Improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.
  3. Relax the muscles and ease muscle tension.
  4. Calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety.
  5. Promote better sleep and overall well-being.
  6. Strengthen the immune system.
  7. Balance the doshas, especially Vata dosha.

Abhyanga is not only a physical therapy but also has a profound effect on the mind and emotions. It is often considered a form of self-care and is practiced regularly to maintain health and prevent imbalances.

Abhyanga can be performed as a standalone therapy or as part of a broader Ayurvedic treatment plan. It is typically performed by trained Ayurvedic therapists in specialized Ayurvedic centers or wellness retreats.

Additionally, Abhyanga can also be practiced as a self-massage at home for its regular and preventive benefits.

As with any Ayurvedic therapy, it is essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before undergoing Abhyanga to determine the appropriate type of oil and massage techniques based on your unique constitution and health conditions.
