Kati/Janu/Greeva Basti
Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on the lower back region. The term “Kati” refers to the “lower back,” and “Basti” means “retention” or “container.” In this treatment, a reservoir or dam is created on the lower back using dough made from black gram flour or other appropriate materials. Warm medicated oil is then poured into the dam and kept for a certain duration.
During the Kati Basti therapy, the warm oil remains in contact with the lower back area and is periodically replenished. The therapeutic properties of the medicated oil penetrate deep into the muscles, ligaments, and tissues of the lower back, providing nourishment, lubrication, and relaxation.
Kati Basti is particularly beneficial for conditions related to the lower back, such as lower back pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, and lumbar spondylosis. It helps to alleviate muscle tension, reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, and promote healing in the affected area.
Apart from physical benefits, Kati Basti can also have a soothing effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
Kati Basti is usually part of a broader Ayurvedic treatment plan and is performed by trained Ayurvedic practitioners. The specific duration and number of sessions may vary depending on the individual’s condition and the practitioner’s recommendations. As with any Ayurvedic therapy, it’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner before undergoing Kati Basti to ensure its suitability and safety for your specific needs.
